The Login Nobody Remembered Can Freeze Your Docks

It's the second week of December. Between the 12.12 sales rush and Christmas orders, a Manila-based warehouse is moving more parcels in a day than it usually does in a week. The docks are full and the trucks are lined up.

Then the scanners stop syncing. Dispatch can't see the queue. Pickers stand by shelves with nothing to pick.

The cause isn't a power outage or a software bug. Months earlier, an IT contractor finished a warehouse system integration and left. His account was never disabled, and it had far more access than it ever needed. Someone else found it before the company did, logged in, and deployed ransomware on the systems running the warehouse.

This is an illustrative scenario, not a specific client story. But  whether you run security or operations, you will recognize the ingredients.

The problem isn't the big gates. It's the side doors.

Philippine logistics runs on connections: warehouse management systems (WMS), transport management systems(TMS), customs and port-related systems, and a wide circle of outsourced partners, from IT vendors to seasonal staff to third-party haulers. Each one needs access, and access gets created quickly, especially during peak season.

What gets created quickly is rarely cleaned up just as fast. Over time, the result is:

  • Dormant accounts that still work long after the person or project is gone.

  • Over-privileged users and service accounts with far more access than their role requires

  • Hidden paths to admin control, where a regular account can climb to a key administrator through a misconfiguration nobody noticed

Nothing looks broken, so nobody looks. But the cost of a hidden login isn't only downtime. An attacker inside your warehouse or shipping systems can also view customer names, addresses, and order details, or tamper with shipping orders. In a business where trust and timing are everything, both can come at an  expensive cost when compromised. Exposed personal data can trigger breach notification obligations to the National Privacy Commission under the Data Privacy Act of 2012, on top of the damage to customer trust.

Why this is hard to see

Most logistics teams can tell you who their administrators are. Far fewer can tell you who could become one.

BeyondTrust's data-driven approach to identity security is built around that gap. Their research points to identity as the common thread in breaches: 90% of breaches are identity-related, and 99% stem from hygiene and posture gaps. In other words, the door was usually already open.

One number, two teams. Do both teams  know their  exposure?

Security teams need to know how many forgotten logins and hidden access paths are sitting in their systems. Every operations head knows what an hour of stopped docks costs in SLA penalties, idle labor, and unhappy shippers. What most can't answer is how many forgotten logins and hidden access paths are sitting in their systems right now.

That number is the starting point. You can't close a door you don't know exists.

Where to begin

BeyondTrust's free Identity Security Risk Assessment is built to give you that number:

  • A quick setup: about 60 minutes of deployment

  • Fast findings: a dashboard of dormant accounts, over-privileged users, missing MFA, and hidden admin paths within 24 hours

  • Clear priorities: guidance on what to fix first

  • No obligation: it's a look, not a commitment

Finding the forgotten login before someone else does is the cheapest insurance you'll get this peak season.
